FAQs
How is WRO different from other robotics competitions like FIRST or VEX?
WRO focuses specifically on autonomous robot programming (no remote control), international competition opportunities, and typically uses LEGO platforms exclusively. Unlike FIRST's emphasis on business plans and community outreach, or VEX's metal construction systems, WRO concentrates on programming logic, engineering design, and problem-solving skills. This focused approach allows students to develop deep expertise in core robotics concepts.
Do students need any prior programming or robotics experience to start?
No prior experience is required. Our programs are designed with progressive skill building starting from absolute beginners. We assess each student's current level during the free assessment and create an appropriate starting point. Many of our most successful students began with no programming background at all.
What's the time commitment expected from students and families?
This varies by program level. Elementary students typically participate in 1.5-hour weekly sessions, while middle and high school students may have 1.5-2 hour sessions. During competition season (Jan-Aug), closer to competitions, committed students may participate in additional practice sessions. We'll work with your family's schedule and discuss time expectations during the initial assessment.
What equipment do families need to purchase, and what's the typical cost?
For school programs, we provide equipment recommendations and can assist with bulk purchasing. For family programs, we provide all robotics equipment during sessions - families don't need to purchase anything initially. If students want to practice at home, we offer equipment rental packages or can provide guidance on purchasing LEGO SPIKE Prime sets (typically $300-400). We'll discuss equipment options during your consultation.
